Historical events

Do we know the truth about history?

History is a very important part of our lives. It has influence on a lot of things on our everyday lives. Consequently, knowing the truth about historical events is essential to understand our world. However, knowing the truth about historical events may be difficult because of politics and popular culture.

In the first place, politicians can twist history to benefit themselves. They can only talk about the part of history which they can take advantage of, instead of describing the facts as they happened. If politicians only explain their way to see history, people believe this without knowing it is not the whole truth. In addition, from an international view, different countries usually have different interpretations of history. Having so many points of view can cause confusion, but most importantly listening to only one will never let us understand history properly.

Popular culture can also make difficult to understand historical events. A great part of history is passed down as stories from older to younger generations. As a result, history can be magnified or summarised as stories are changed by the passing of each generation. Furthermore, nowadays a similar thing can happen with the Internet. News and stories on the Internet spread a lot more quickly, but the same thing can happen to the them.

In conclusion, politics and popular culture are the reasons which make make knowing the truth about history so difficult. Politics show us only one point of view, so we don’t interpret history correctly. Popular culture deforms history because of the circulation of information. I believe both have equal influence over the way we comprehend history. Nevertheless, I think politics should not influence history, as it is unfair to manipulate history for someone’s benefit.
